ALICE Springs OLSH student Elly Farkas was amazed to hear an East Timorese family had sold its farm animals to send their daughter to school for $12 a year.
The students gave $US12,000 to 12 different organisations such as schools and health clinics at East Timor.
Miss Farkas was one of eight OLSH students who made the pilgrimage to East Timor.
The nine-day experience also sent shockwaves to Caragah Magann, 17.
She said she saw two gangs fighting with rocks while travelling over a bridge out of Dili.
Caragah said: ``I wasn't scared. It's not our business. The country is still working itself out.''
It took six hours to travel 300km from Dili to the little village of Bucoli.
Caity Schutt, 17, said painting classroom walls gave them a sense of belonging.
She said: ``Children would be calling out our names. We felt like celebrities.''
