16,000 set for Show

Carenda Jenkin

MORE than 16,000 people are expected to enter Blatherskite Park this weekend for the 49th annual Alice Springs Show.

While Bananas In Pyjamas will be the big drawcard for children, the Show Society president Brad Bellette said there was something for everyone.

More than 250 stalls have filled the Greatorex Pavilion and the show attracted 2500 craft entries. Over 200 chickens are entered.

Highlights will include diving pigs, stilt walkers, a whip fighting show, pet nursery and horse events.

Mr Bellette said: ``Back in the '80s we once got 20,000 people through the gates, but these days it is normally between 16,000 and 18,000.

``There's 30 volunteers and all the stewards are the backbone. It's all about getting back to the grassroots.

``There will be over 250 stalls and we are still squeezing in people now. We are pretty excited about it - there's so much to look at.''

There will be a free bus service running to and from the show tomorrow and Saturday.

It will run hourly from 11am to 3pm, with stops outside the Civic Centre, opposite Melanka Lodge, Oasis Motel and Gap Road Smart Mart.

The return journeys are on the half hour from 1.30pm to 5.30pm tomorrow, but there are only two on Saturday at 1.30pm and 2.30pm.

Admission to the show is $15 for adults and $7 for children and pensioners.
